Growing Miniginish Community Garden Official Opening!
As part of Volunteer week and Skye week, local groups got together at Minginish Community Hall on Saturday afternoon organised by Minginish Community Association. There was a great turn-out and representations from the Craft group, the History of Minginish, the Community Minibus, the Ceilidh Dance group, the Community Shop, the Pier group, the new Thursday Gathering and a proposal to start Book Bug. There was live music from The Stravaigers and teas, cakes and drams.
The highlight of the afternoon was the opening of the new community garden – Growing Minginish / A’ Fàs Minginis. This has an indoor garden plus seating in a large accessible polytunnel and an outdoor sensory courtyard garden. The ribbon to the polytunnel was cut by young gardener Eilidh MacLeod, with great enthusiam and to a terrific round of applause. Younger people enjoyed the sand pit, the swings and some planting while everyone else enjoyed a good catch-up. The day was a great success for everyone involved with suggestions to make it an annual event.
The aim of the community garden is to provide a space for growing and meeting – a green community hub. Anyone interested in finding out more about the community garden can look on www.growingminginish.com or come along for a chat on a Thursday at 2pm in the polytunnel.
This was a good day - the culmination of 32 months planning and coordinating from an idea sitting on the beach at Fiscavaig bay to the finished product: pollytunnel, sensory outdoor courtyard and swings, all wheelchair accessible with a path all around the hall. The project will now continue to evolve with plans for water harvesting, more outdoor planting and providing food for the community by donation.
